“The development of a true cold air induction system for the 2010 Mazda 3 was approached by keeping the overall design and installation of the system simple while still enabling it to perform significantly better than the stock intake,” says product design manager John Concialdi. He also explained that the intake itself is simple for the end user to install in part due to the development of a special throttle body coupler which allows use of the OEM PCV hard line. The intake itself was developed with 2.75″ diameter tubing that goes to a cone shaped air filter with an offset flange. This allows placement of the filter in a low isolated location behind the front fascia so it feeds cooler outside air to the engine. AEM’s R&D group tested several different Venturi sizes until the right one was found to satisfy their demands for proper fuel trims and power output.

The 21-695C and 21-695P intakes performed strongly during testing showing a gain of 6.7 hp at 6100 rpm and 5.75 ft-lbs of torque at 6100 rpm. The all-new 370Z incorporates outstanding advancements in both mechanical and electronic features alike. Powered by the 3.7-liter VQ37VHR dual-over-head-cam V6 engine, the 370Z generates an impressive 332 horsepower (at the flywheel) in stock form. This abundance of power is made possible by utilizing Nissan’s Variable Valve and Lift Control technology (VVEL). Nissan’s VVEL variable valve timing technology allows the VQ37 engine to be more efficient while improving response and power output at higher RPMs.

In order to harness the power of the 370Z’s V6 engine, Nissan invested particular attention to the 370Z’s power delivery system. To transfer the power to the rear wheels, Nissan couples the powerful engine to either a 7-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, or a 6-speed manual transmission that features the first ever synchronized downshift rev-match system.

When upgrading a vehicle such as the 370Z, enthusiasts expect a high caliber of technology from their performance parts as well. AEM has accomplished incredible technological advances with their Electronically Tuned Intake (ETI) technology. The great news for 370Z enthusiasts is that a new ETI Cold Air Intake System is now available for the 2009 Nissan 370Z (part number 41-1001P).

To match up to the VQ37′s dual throttle bodies, the 41-1001P is comprised of dual mandrel-bent aluminum inlet tubes. Each highly polished 2.75-inch inlet tube originates at the throttle body and routes to the left and right wheel wells. It is in the wheel wells that DryFlow performance air filters are mounted to each inlet tube. The oil-free DryFlow technology is very durable and easy to clean. To take the filtration properties of the DryFlow performance air filter even further, AEM offers Filter Wraps that are manufactured from durable micro-screen materials that are pretreated with a proprietary hydrophobic process. AEM filter wraps repel water splashes and extend the filters service life. For the 41-1001P air intake system, AEM Filter Wraps are available as a separate accessory (part number 1-4000).

In order to clear enough space for the DryFlow air filters, AEM includes a custom designed windshield washer fluid reservoir with each 41-1001P air intake system. Each 370Z air intake system also includes two pre-programmed ETI modules. Both of the 370Z’s Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensors plug directly into an included ETI module, which are specifically programmed to read the proper air density data. The result is more horsepower and torque gains.

In the case of the 370Z, the VQ37 engine responded well to AEM’s ETI technology. The 41-1001P cold air intake systems improve the 370Z’s power output from the stock baseline of 241 hp to a peak of 250 hp with the intake installed. In addition to enhancing the peak horsepower performance, a maximum gain of 9.67 horsepower was also recorded at 7,100 RPM during AEM’s testing. As seen on the dyno graph, a vast improvement is made from 6,600 RPM until the VQ37′s redline.

There are ten DUB shows total, kicking off in Detroit, Michigan and ending the year long party in party-town, Las Vegas, Nevada, November 2nd and 3rd. Steve Burkett brought his sweet 2008 GMC Yukon 5.3L to the Phoenix DUB Show and won the Best Street SUV trophy.

“As a custom show car builder, I take a lot of time to compare products. While most companies offer the same product under a different name, AEM stood out to me, because while not only does it add horsepower, it also adds the old school polished aluminum look,” explains Burkett.

“Almost every other company makes their components to blend in with the engine compartment, I chose AEM because of their polished intake tube. This adds a little bit of flash to the engine compartment.”

Burkett says he’s currently in the conceptual stages for his next project which will more than likely be a feature vehicle for General Motors.

“For that project I am choosing either a 1-ton GMC Duramax Quad Cab 4×4 or a 1-ton Dually Duramax Quad Cab,” add Burkett.

We hear this from our customers all of the time. Every one wants to know which cold air intake will make the most horsepower for their car or truck, and rightfully so. Who wants to spend a few hundred bucks on an intake just to find that a different brand made more power? We set out to see if we can answer some of the most common questions regarding cold air intakes.

What is a cold air intake?

A cold air intake is designed to suck in as much cold air into the engine as possible. It does this, by having the air filter as far away from the heat of the engine bay as possible, relocating the air filter usually under one of the fenders, or into the bumper. A typical intake, called a short ram intake usually sits around where the stock air box is located.

AEM Cold Air Intake Kit

The AEM Cold Air Intake kit has been around for a very long time. AEM intakes are available in a few different colors, and feature a special AEM Dry Air Filter that doesn’t need to be re-oiled. One of the problems with re-oiling, and with any filter that requires oil, is that the oil can contaminate sensors along the intake track, such as MAF (Mass air flow sensors), and MAP (manifold absolute pressure sensors). AEM also has a lot of resources that allow them to do heavy R&D on each cold air intake to ensure that each one makes as much power as possible, based on a stock engine. AEM also knows that depending on the car and engine bay, sometimes a cold air intake doesn’t make sense. If you see that there is an AEM Short Ram Intake Kit available for your car, but not a cold air intake, this means that AEM decided that making a cold air intake for your car simply wouldn’t make sense, since it doesn’t make more power over the short ram.

Fujita Cold Air Intake

Fujita has an in house dynojet that they use to test the intake on various applications to ensure that when they release a cold air intake, it is one of the highest performing on the market. The unique feature about the Fujita cold air intake, is that Fujita, on some models, allows it to be a two piece. This means that you can remove the bottom piece that makes the intake a cold air, and keep it a short ram for when its raining outside, and you do not want to worry about your air filter sucking in water. Each Fujita Cold Air intake is made from lightweight aluminum, and has carbon plated t-bolt clamps that are extremely strong, and won’t blow off. Their sensor fittings are CNC machined for a perfect fit, and to ensure the best air/fuel ratios. Similar to the AEM, they offer a Fujita Short Ram Intake as well.

HPS Cold Air Intake Kit

HPS, sometimes known as HiProSpeed, makes some of the best looking cold air intake kits on the market. The HPS Cold Air Intake kit is especially nice, because HPS took the time to do extensive testing with fuel trim correction, and OBDII sensors to make sure that the engine does not go lean in any instance during the RPM band due to the intake, which prevents the car from throwing a check engine light. Similiar to the Fujita, the HPS has some applications which can be converted into a short ram intake, which prevents any worry about hydro-lock. HPS produces race quality intakes, and come with quality t-bolt clamps and HPS silicone coupling to top off the kit. If you wanted just the HPS Short Ram Intake, they offer that as well.

Injen Cold Air Intake Kit

Injen has been creating intakes since 1981 when it’s sister company, RD Metal Works was established. With this kind of history, Injen has been producing some of the best quality, best made intakes we have seen on the market today. Injen is made in house, in their facility in Southern California. Injen uses the highest quality aluminum, and has the pipe thickness to be perfect to produce the best sound, best air flow characteristics, and best performance of any intake available on the market. For those of you with factory turbo applications, they have the Injen Short Ram Intake, which has fit and finish second to none. Takeda Cold Air Intake

Takeda is a new comer to the sport compact industry market, but it’s founding company, aFe, is no newbie. They have been around for years, producing some of the best intakes on the market. The Takeda cold air intake takes on a special design to produce the most power and torque possible, and is made of special material that does not absorb as much engine heat, allowing the air to be cooler, more dense, and produce more power. Many of the Takeda cold air intakes come with a special air box that prevents hot air from reaching the air filter, so your car can make even more horsepower and torque. aFe claims that this intake is the only sealed air intake kit on the market today. On some cars, this intake has produced over 20 horsepower! aFe also produces the Takeda Short Ram Intake for those who want a less expensive, and easier to install intake system.

For those of you who aren’t yet ready to step up to an intake kit, K&N offers an alternative… a K&N Air Filter, which is a drop in air filter, and replaces your factory air filter. Still gives a horsepower and torque gain!

Many consider the mid to late 1960′s the beginning of the muscle car era. In 1964, the Ford Motor Company released its Ford Mustang. The Mustang is still coined the originator of the “Pony Car” class of American automobiles. The Mustang however would not be the only offering in this popular class as General Motors quickly reacted by debuting their Chevrolet Camaro for the 1967 model year. In response to the Mustang and Camaro, the Chrysler Corporation followed suit by introducing the Dodge Challenger. With muscle cars available from each of the Big Three, the rest is history.

In 2008, Chrysler presented a remake of their vintage Dodge Challenger with a retro model. The 2008 Dodge Challenger features modern technology wrapped by old-school looks. The revised Challenger was so well received that Dodge continued to offer the vehicle for the 2009 model year. Muscle car enthusiasts weren’t the only ones to take notice of the retro Dodge, AEM’s air intake system engineers were also eager to get their hands on the new Challenger.

After investing much research and development into the new Challenger, AEM proudly introduces a Brute Force Air Intake System for the 2009 Dodge Challenger with the 5.7 and 6.1-liter V8 engines (Part Number 21-8223DC). The 21-8223DC is a full cold-air intake system that incorporates a two-piece design to bring in cool air from a 3.5×7-inch DRYFLOW air filter (Part Number 21-2147DK).

The modern 5.7 and 6.1-liter V8 engines offered by Dodge in their 2009 Challengers are outfitted with the latest technology to generate big power. AEM also implements the latest in air intake system technology and engineering with the 21-8223DC Brute Force intake system. As a result, the 2009 Dodge Challenger with 6.1-liter engine benefits from a massive maximum gain of 24 horsepower with the Brute Force air intake system installed. This jump in power output brings the Challenger’s peak power up from 302 horsepower to 325 horsepower!

The 21-8223DC Brute Force air intake system comes with a large oil-free DRYFLOW performance air filter (21-2147DK). The 21-2147DK has a flange inside diameter of 3.5-inches (89mm) and a height of 7-inches (178mm), allowing the delivery of a plentiful amount of airflow to the 5.7 and 6.1-liter V8 engines of the Dodge Challenger. The Hyundai Genesis Coupe was released as a direct competitor to sports cars such as the Infiniti G37 and Nissan 370Z. With styling cues derived from both challengers, the Hyundai comes out of the gates strong in the appearance segment. The Genesis Coupe also features high-quality components such as Brembo performance brakes, a limited-slip differential and a Mitsubishi TD04H turbocharger. It is in the power department however that the Genesis Coupe lacks amongst its counterparts. Weighing in at a hefty 3,294 Lbs., the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine only musters up 210 horsepower. In class of vehicles that generate right around 300 horsepower, the Genesis falls a few ponies short

Where the Genesis Coupe excels however is in its price tag and in its tuner-friendly design. The 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe with the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine has a starting MSRP of just $22k. The comparatively inexpensive price tag combined with support from the aftermarket community brings the Genesis Coupe to the forefront for performance enthusiasts.

Since the introduction of the Genesis Coupe, AEM has been working on several performance components for the 2.0-liter turbo engine. To increase the airflow to the turbocharged engine, AEM has proudly released a Cold Air Intake System for the 2010 Hyundai Genesis Coupe with the 2.0-liter engine (Part Number 21-687C).

The 21-687C cold air intake system connects directly to the Genesis’ TD04H turbo compressor inlet. From the turbocharger, the intake inlet tube is directed to the passenger side wheel well. In order to make a clear path to the passenger side wheel well, AEM engineers had to redesign the vehicle’s windshield washer tank. To this end, the AEM cold air intake for the Genesis (21-687C) includes a high-quality windshield washer tank to replace the factory unit. With the AEM washer tank in place, the mandrel-bent aluminum inlet tube is routed to the passenger wheel well and is capped by a DRYFLOW performance air filter (Part Number 21-2047DK). The 21-2047DK DRYFLOW performance air filter features an inlet diameter of 3.5-inches (89mm) and a height of 7-inches (178mm). The oil-free DRYFLOW technology is extremely durable and easy to clean.

With its efficient design, the 21-687C air intake system is able to produce a maximum gain of seven horsepower at 6,500 RPM on the 2.0-liter engine. By allowing the turbocharger to take in more airflow, peak power is also improved with the addition of the AEM cold air intake. This cold air intake system is simple to install using basic tools.

Jeremy Lookofsky said he was itching to build something insane and his inspiration of Project Street Warrior came from a mix of builds

Lookofsky named his build, Street Warrior Cartel xD. “The inspiration came from a mix of builds,” he said. “I have been itching to build something insane but something that could also be used to get from show to show without a trailer.”
