Edge Products’ New Module Improves Power and Fuel Economy

Edge Products has been producing modules and programmers power for gas- and diesel-powered pickups since 1999. Edge has always been known for the power its products produce, but in an age of rising gas prices, customers have inquired about what these power producers will do to their fuel economy.

Many customers have submitted unsolicited opinions that saw immediate improvements in fuel economy after installing an Edge module or programmer. With Edge’s latest development — the Juice with Attitude for the 2006-2007 GM/Chevy Duramax LBZ/LLY engines — its engineers developed a specific “mileage” tune (Level 1). Edge’s engineers conducted a study to measure the effects of the Juice on fuel economy, and the results were amazing: the module increased fuel economy by 5.1%.

Test Setup
In order to consistently and reliably test fuel economy, a system was developed so that the fuel-delivery system was set up independent of the test vehicle’s fuel tank. This setup allowed the engine to burn fuel entirely from the test tank.

A Fairbanks counting weight scale accurate to five thousandths was used to measure the net fuel burned during the tests. The net weight of fuel burned during the test was then compared to a standard weight per gallon of diesel fuel, which allowed for an accurate calculation of fuel economy in miles per gallon.

A five gallon jug was modified with a fuel delivery and a fuel return line. A ½-inch rubber hose was used to deliver fuel from the test tank into the feed line on the engine. A similar 3/8-inch rubber line was used to return fuel to the test tank. The test tank sat on the Fairbanks scale, which allowed for real-time measurement of fuel burned. Additionally, the scale and test tank sat on an independent platform, which increased accuracy by preventing measurement errors which could be caused by floating hoses.

Test Procedure
Tests were run on a Mustang chassis dynamometer (dyno) using a constant load percentage test. The dyno was set to apply different loads depending on the test conducted. For accuracy, the cruise control was set at 70 MPH (1,820 RPM). Once 70 MPH had been reached, the trip odometer was reset and the starting weight value of the fuel was recorded. Once the trip odometer reached 20.0 miles, the weight of the value was again recorded. Additionally, a swamp cooler in the dyno room ran throughout the test in order to keep the dyno bay at constant cool temperature.

Tests were run in four sessions. While testing level one fuel economy improvements, four tests were run back to back: test one was at stock; test two was at level one; test three returned to stock; and test four was run at level one again. Running tests in this manner helps compensate for inconsistencies in the testing procedure, such as load fluctuations of the dyno with changes in temperature.

To calibrate the weight standard for one gallon of diesel fuel, a 16 oz. graduated cylinder was filled to the 16 oz. line and then fuel was added into a larger container which sat on the Fairbanks scale. Four 16 oz. measurements were then added to the larger container. The larger container and fuel were weighed on the scale. The weight of the container was subtracted from the gross weight, giving the net weight of the fuel. This amount was divided by four to derive the average weight of the four 16 fl. oz. measurements. This average weight was then multiplied by eight to find the weight per gallon of diesel.

Test Results
Test group one consisted of three stock runs and two level one runs under a 15% load on the dyno. Testing conditions are listed on the spreadsheet (below). From the averaged stock and level one runs, the Juice module increased fuel economy by 5.1%.

Test groups two, three, and four all operated under the same conditions. The load percentage on the dyno and the power levels were changed to see how fuel economy was influenced
under these conditions. All of the test blocks resulted in an increase of approximately 5% over stock.

Almost all of the companies that produce aftermarket performance electronics claim that their products could result in increased fuel economy. However, their claims are usually unsubstantiated customer assertions. Edge’s test thoroughly and conclusively proves that the LBZ/LLY Juice module not only produces horsepower gains of up to 100HP, but also saves customers 5% in fuel economy, definitively delivering the best of both worlds.

Gardella Racing Slides Into 3rd Place to Finish the 2010 Formula DRIFT Season

The 2010 Formula DRIFT season was one for the record books. Teams were sporting new cars with bigger and more powerful motors which only intensified the competition and excitement at every event. Fans were treated to big tire smoke and screaming full throttle action at each of the 7 stops throughout the season.

The season started off a little slow for Gardella Racing and their AEM Sponsored Mobil 1 Pontiac Solstice driven by Ryan Tuerck, but they rallied about half way through the season and charged hard with two 2nd place finishes along the way to finish in 3rd place overall, taking the podium spot from Daijiro Yoshihara by just 1 point.

AEM Induction Systems recently had the opportunity to asked team owner Gary Gardella about their 2010 season and what may be coming down the pipe for 2011. Here’s what Gary had to say.

What were some of the major challenges your team faced for the 2010 season?
To start the season off, we were running our Ecotec 4 cylinder that produced a ton of HP, but just did not have the torque curve that was needed to keep up with some of the big shots in the Formula Drift series. So, starting the season off we knew we were at a disadvantage. Fortunately, we were able to turn this around for the second half of the season once we dropped in an LS7.

How do you feel about your team’s performance over the 2010 season?
I think it was phenomenal! I have always raced to win and this season was a major learning curve as I continue to adjust to a judged sport. As the season went on, I realized that I had to relax, begin to understand the sport as a whole, and not put so much pressure on myself and the team.

What was the highlight of the season for you?
The highlight of my season was in Evergreen Speedway when we finished 2nd to Tanner. It was not because we finished on the podium, but because the guests we had at the event had so much fun. They were on their feet the entire event rooting on Ryan Tuerck and the Mobil 1 Solstice.

What was the lowpoint of the season?
Not winning an event.

What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned from the 2010 season?
Like I mentioned above, that winning is not everything. Throughout my entire racing career, I have raced to win. In drag racing you are able to make upgrades and modifications to the car and win. In drifting you are judged and the equipment you are using is only part of the equation. I have never lost so much in my entire career, yet this has been one of my most successful years in racing for many other reasons.

Are there any changes you’re planning to make for the 2011 season that you can share?
You will see many major changes in our program for 2011. To start, we are focused on building new competition cars during the off-season. There will be a second driver in our Solstice for a few select FD events. The team is also planning an international tour in the 2nd half of 2011.

Gardella Racing is definitely hitting their stride and looks to be one of the strongest contenders for the top of the podium in the upcoming 2011 season. They’ve learned so much from the 2010 season and it’s only going to help make next year that much better.

Valve Stem Options

The TiAL F38 is the only wastegate with the option to choose the valve stem’s protective coating. To keep the overall cost of the unit down, the choice of coating was left to the customer.
Lead Oxide which is present only when burning leaded fuels is corrosive to the Black coating on the Street valve’s stem. Extended use of leaded fuel will cause performance problems and unreliable valve actuation.
The Silver coating on the Race valve stem is resistant to the corrosive effects of Lead Oxide. Similarly works well with unleaded fuel. The Racing valve is available for an additional charge.

Tial 41mm Wastegate

– High temp NiCrFe based alloy is used for valve and 347SS valve housing will offer longer product life compared to competing designs.
- High temperature silicone Nomex reinforced actuator diaphragm.
