On November 2, 2010, California voters are going to the polls to determine if they are going to pass Proposition 19 (also known as the Regulate, Control and Tax Cannabis Act of 2010), which will in essence legalize marijuana in California. People who oppose Proposition 19, and do not want marijuana legalized, are arguing that the roads are going to be more dangerous. Roger Salazar from “No on Proposition 19″ says: “there won’t be anything to stop anyone from legally finishing off a couple joints before getting behind the wheel.”

The fact is there is no way to stop people from smoking marijuana and driving now, and tax dollars are being spent to enforce current drug laws that are essentially unstoppable. However, Federal law still states that marijuana is illegal, so if Proposition 19 passes, it is going to be in direct violation of federal law.

Opponents are also worried that if Proposition 19 passes, many other states are going to follow suit and legalize it as well. Supporters say there should be no issue as long as you treat marijuana laws same as you treat alcohol laws.
