2012 Scion FT-S (Toyota FT-86 Concept) Info and Pics

March 7th, 2011 1 comment

The new Toyota FT-86 II Concept (Scion FT-S) makes its world debut at the 2011 Geneva motor show, giving the clearest indication yet as to the final design of Toyota’s next sports car. It marks a return to the passion for driving that has inspired great Toyota cars of the past, starting with the legendary 2000 GT in the 1960s.

With its long, low bonnet, high wings and rear-set cabin, the Toyota FT-86 II Concept pays homage to Toyota’s sports car history and is an entirely driver-oriented concept. It was created at Toyota’s European design studio ED2, where its styling was dubbed ‘functional beauty’: its bold, sweeping form has been generated purely according to the constraints of function and aerodynamics.

The low, highly aerodynamic bodyshell is stretched tight over the engineering hard points, with the muscular bodywork rendered as compact as possible. The concept measures 4,235mm long, 1,795mm wide and 1,270mm high, with a long, 2,570mm wheelbase.

Rather than using a heavy, large displacement powertrain to secure performance, the FT-86 II returns to Toyota’s sporting roots by combining a free-revving boxer petrol engine with a compact and lightweight six-speed manual transmission and a low centre of gravity to achieve the best possible power to weight ratio.

Both the powertrain and the driving position have been set as low and as far back as possible to optimise balance for maximum poise, high-speed stability and agility. With a front-engine/rear-wheel drive configuration, this gives the car lively, accessible performance that is easy to harness and enjoy.

The Toyota FT-86 II Concept is the latest stage in the development of a new, compact rear-wheel drive sports car that is being jointly developed by Toyota and Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru). The new model will be launched in Europe in 2012.

2011 Subaru WRX STI spec C

FHI launched the Subaru Impreza WRX STI spec C

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), the maker of Subaru automobiles, today introduced the “Subaru Impreza WRX spec C”, a new addition to the current WRX STI line-up. The model goes on sale today through Subaru dealerships in Japan.

Based on the Impreza WRX STI, the iconic sport model of Subaru, the WRX STI spec C model features enhanced engine and chassis performance as well as a lighter body on the premise of driving in motorsports. The model further strengthens its presence in the high performance car arena by offering sheer excitement and unique driving sensations as a distinctive sport model, in line with the performance level originally delivered by the Impreza WRX STI.

The twin scroll turbocharger newly adopted ball bearings for the turbine axle bearing, and the ECU (Engine Control Unit) program was also exclusively tuned. Thus the engine of the spec C model increases the maximum torque, and provides quicker response and improved accelerating performance. The adoption of an aluminum engine hood, laminar window glasses and a downsized battery resulted in a lighter body, which further refines the model’s driving performance. Thanks to its specially tuned front & rear suspensions, the chassis offers stable and linear driving control even in marginal driving conditions.

Subaru further enhances the WRX STI line-up by introducing this STI spec C model, in addition to the regular WRX STI model and STI A-Line model, the AT version.

Outline of Subaru Impreza WRX STI spec C

Enhancement of Engine performance:

Ball bearings of the turbine axle were newly adopted to reduce friction in the turbocharger. With the optimized ECU programming, the engine increases the maximum torque by 8 Nm, compared to the base WRX STI model, and it offers smoother and quicker response to the accelerator pedal and excellent accelerating performance. An inter-cooler water spray prevents rise in intake-air temperature at continued high-load driving, providing stable engine performance and improved efficiency.

Enhancement of Chassis performance:

Reinforcement of the cross member in front-suspensions offers a linear steering response.

Rear LSD (Limited Slip Differential) system was changed to a mechanical type from a Torsen type to obtain the steady and powerful traction during cornering.

Bridgestone “POTENZA RE070” (245/40R18) were adopted to enhance cornering ability and higher grip performance, especially in dry conditions.

Nimble handling with a firm steering feel is assured by increasing oil flow volume in the power steering system.

Lightened body:

An aluminum engine hood and a downsized battery, which make the front section of the vehicle lighter, produce better maneuverability.

Laminar glasses were adopted in the front and side windows. They lightened the upper section of the body weight, resulting in improved stability during cornering.

Newly-designed lightweight 18-inches alloy wheels are standard to offer excellent road-hugging property by reducing unsprung weight.

A structural change of fuel pump provides stable fuel delivery even on high-load driving.
Gold colored “brembo” brake calipers are standard.
The front bucket seats (fabric with red stitch) are standard on models with 18-inches alloy wheels.
The “RECARO” seats are optional with SRS front side airbags and SRS curtain airbags on models with 18-inches alloy wheels.

Major specifications:
-Engine type: Horizontally-Opposed 4-cylinder DOHC 16-valve turbocharged engine
-Displacement: 1,994 cc
-Maximum output: 227kW (308 PS)/6,400 rpm
-Maximum torque: 430 Nm (43.8 kgfm)/4,400 rpm
-Turbo type: Ball-bearing type twin scroll turbocharger

COBB AccessPORT ProTuner EFI Logics makes big power with the 2010 Subaru Legacy GT

March 9th, 2010 No comments

While the COBB AccessPORT for the 2010 Legacy GT has not been fully released, a select group of ProTuners are making good progress with the BETA version of ProTuner software for this vehicle. The 2010 Legacy marks a complete departure from the turbo system we have known grown to love and trust on turbocharged Subarus of the past. Instead of locating the turbo above and behind the engine, the new Legacy has its turbo slung under the engine. In addition, this vehicle sports an all-new ECU. BETA testing is well underway and ProTuner EFI Logics was able to test the new software on a willing customer’s car with some very impressive results.

While peak hp increased 9hp to 223hp, MASSIVE gains of up to 60hp in the midrange really brought the car to life. This was due to huge torque gains of up to 90ft-lbs, bringing peak torque to 304ft-lbs from the stock 214ft-lbs. Looking at the graph, it’s plain to see that these gains extend throughout the entire rev range! Note that this is on a bone stock 2010 Legacy GT. No intake, exhaust, fuel grade change or anything was added to the stock car. These impressive gains are simply from remapping the ECU with a proper AccessPORT calibration.

This indicates a smaller turbo than what is currently available on the STI and WRX. With exhaust and intake modifications, power output could be increased by another 25-35hp with even more torque. With the Legacy growing from smallish sport sedan to a much larger tourer, the added power will be welcome. In addition to the AccessPORT, look for other parts coming online for this vehicle in the near future as well.

*both runs were made in 3rd gear
