The Prius Sucks – VW Passat BlueMotion Diesel Breaks Guinness World Record 89.83 MPG!

October 4th, 2010 No comments

OK, so maybe the Prius hybrid doesn’t suck, but it’s not the so called Fuel Economy King of the Hill anymore. Volkswagen has lifted their heads and announced that their Passat BlueMotion Diesel breaks the Guinness World Record and goes 1526.63 miles on a single tank of fuel! The car was driven by Gavin Conway who is with the Sunday Times.

Keep in mind, this is a European spec VW Passat, and is powered by a 1.6 liter common rail TDI diesel engine. The driver maintained about 45 miles per hour which also included some stop and go within town. Overall, the car averaged 89.83 miles per gallon, which way surpasses the manufactures official figures of a combined 64.2 mpg.

So… any Prius guys ready to take the throne away from VW?

Volkswagen has a press release:

A Volkswagen Passat BlueMotion has set a new Guinness World Record for the longest distance traveled by a standard production passenger car on a single tank of fuel. The attempt, carried out by a team from The Sunday Times, involved driving from Maidstone in Kent to the South of France and back. The Passat BlueMotion finally ran out of fuel close to Calais after completing a distance of 1,526.63 miles.

The route mainly followed French autoroutes, but included some town driving, resulting in an average speed of just over 45 mph.

Gavin Conway, for The Sunday Times, drove the Passat BlueMotion during the three-day record-breaking trip, accompanied by a navigator and video crew. Two AA patrolmen followed the entire attempt in their van to witness the journey independently for the Guinness World Records organisation, which accredited the record.

Powered by a Volkswagen 1.6-litre common rail TDI engine developing 105 PS, the Passat BlueMotion used for the record attempt was a standard production model. In common with the Polo and Golf BlueMotion models, the Passat is fitted with aerodynamic modifications to the bodywork, a lower ride height, Stop/Start, programmed battery charging, longer gearing and low rolling resistance tyres. The result is a vehicle that is completely conventional to drive, service and maintain yet among the most efficient vehicles on the road today.

The Passat BlueMotion’s fuel tank was drained before the record breaking journey and filled with 77.25 litres of standard forecourt diesel, resulting in an overall fuel consumption of 89.83 miles per gallon. This substantially exceeds the Passat BlueMotion’s official combined figure of 64.2 mpg. The resulting fuel cost for the journey works out at just 6.17p per mile travelled.

In setting the record the Passat BlueMotion traveled a distance equivalent to driving from London to Malaga, without needing to refuel or from New York to Los Angeles with a single stop for diesel.

2000-2006 Audi A8 4.2
2000-2006 Audi A6 4.2
2002-2003 Audi S6 4.2
2004-2009 Audi S4 4.2
2004 Audi Allroad 4.2
2004-2006 Volkswagen Touareg
2008+ Audi R8 4.2 FSI

Introducing the NEW PES G4 MPI supercharger system for the VAG 4.2L 5V engine group as well as the Audi R8 4.2FSI . At the heart of the system is the PES cast aluminum intake manifold and an Eaton M90 supercharger. This roots-type positive displacement supercharger delivers instant, seamless boost throughout the RPM range. Eaton superchargers are used as OEM equipment on Mercedes Benz, Aston Martin, and Jaguar automobiles. The system is supplied complete with all parts necessary for installation.

The addition of forced induction necessitates enhanced fuel delivery to ensure the correct air/fuel ratio for performance and safety. The kit includes PES’s in house ECU recalibrating and offers ultra smooth drivability, and seamless power delivery. The G4 MPI system is the result of over 2 years of design and road testing using data logging software. Our vehicles are tested under a wide variety of driving conditions ranging from “easy” daily commutes to severe track conditions. We also test our systems in a broad range of temperatures, from bitter winter cold to blazing summer heat. Testing is also conducted using both Dynojet and Mustang dynamometers. We are so confident in the reliability of the system that we offer a one year, unlimited mileage warranty.

The G4 comes in 3 configurations for MPI 4.2L cars…

Our low boost (5psi) kit with a power increase of approx 20-25% over stock. The Stage 1 system offers a real power boost that you can truly feel. This entry level system is designed so that it may be upgraded easily to the intercooled version at any time. $6495

An intercooled version of the 5psi kit with an air – liquid intercooler system producing a power increase of approx 35% over stock. This configuration was tuned for vehicles with Tiptronic transmissions. It offers excellent power with no worries of transmission failures. Stage 1 PLUS is also a great alternative for those with 6speed cars that want to add significant power while keeping the boost pressure down to the modest 5psi level due to poor available fuel or extreme ambient temperatures. $8495

Our 7psi kit is combined with our air – liquid intercooler system. This system is designed ONLY for Audi S4 6speed cars at this time. The system offers gains of approx 40-45% over stock. $8495

Includes all the parts you will need to turn your Stage 1 system into the Stage 1 Plus or Stage 2 system without removing the manifold from the car! The Stage 1 system is designed so that it may be upgraded easily to the intercooled version at any time. The liquid intercooler core is inserted into the top of the intake manifold by simply removing the manifold cover plate. The system includes the liquid intercooler core, a heat exchanger which sits behind the bumper cover, a Bosch high flow coolant pump, a coolant reservoir/expansion tank, plus all the hoses, fittings, and wiring needed to complete the installation. When upgrading to the intercooled version your ECU will also be flashed to the stage of your choice.

Information coming soon…
