COBB AccessPORT ProTuner EFI Logics makes big power with the 2010 Subaru Legacy GT

March 9th, 2010 Redline Motive No comments

While the COBB AccessPORT for the 2010 Legacy GT has not been fully released, a select group of ProTuners are making good progress with the BETA version of ProTuner software for this vehicle. The 2010 Legacy marks a complete departure from the turbo system we have known grown to love and trust on turbocharged Subarus of the past. Instead of locating the turbo above and behind the engine, the new Legacy has its turbo slung under the engine. In addition, this vehicle sports an all-new ECU. BETA testing is well underway and ProTuner EFI Logics was able to test the new software on a willing customer’s car with some very impressive results.

While peak hp increased 9hp to 223hp, MASSIVE gains of up to 60hp in the midrange really brought the car to life. This was due to huge torque gains of up to 90ft-lbs, bringing peak torque to 304ft-lbs from the stock 214ft-lbs. Looking at the graph, it’s plain to see that these gains extend throughout the entire rev range! Note that this is on a bone stock 2010 Legacy GT. No intake, exhaust, fuel grade change or anything was added to the stock car. These impressive gains are simply from remapping the ECU with a proper AccessPORT calibration.

This indicates a smaller turbo than what is currently available on the STI and WRX. With exhaust and intake modifications, power output could be increased by another 25-35hp with even more torque. With the Legacy growing from smallish sport sedan to a much larger tourer, the added power will be welcome. In addition to the AccessPORT, look for other parts coming online for this vehicle in the near future as well.

*both runs were made in 3rd gear

New Honda Civic AccessPORT Maps Eliminate Rev-Hang

January 9th, 2010 Redline Motive No comments

hondaaccessport

COBB Tuning has released an update that completely eliminates the rev-hang issues that the Honda Civic Si exhibits. Rev-hang presents itself during gearshift events. When the clutch is depressed and the throttle is closed, drivers can see that the engine rpm stays constant for a period of time, not dropping even though the driver has completely lifted off the throttle pedal. This is how Honda tuned the 2006-2009 Civic Si and is considered normal behavior from the factory.

This AccessPORT update completely eliminates this rev-hang phenomenon. Engine RPM drops immediately when the clutch is depressed and throttle is closed. The vehicle responds much more like it has a cable controlled throttle plate.

If you are running a customized map, you can convert your map to eliminate rev-hang using the Honda Map Conversion Tool. Instructions and conversion tool download links can be found on the Honda Map Conversion Tool Page. Follow the instructions listed on the page.

Other AccessPORT development efforts are progressing well. We are continuing to work hard to bring the best tuning solution available for Honda tuning enthusiasts.

COBB Nissan GTR Exhaust Y Pipe

December 21st, 2009 Redline Motive No comments

nissan-gtr-cobb-y-pipe

COBB Tuning has announced the 3.5inch Stainless Steel Y-Pipe for the Nissan GT-R. The stock y-pipe with factory catalytic converters is a fairly restrictive element in the GT-R’s exhaust system. The COBB 3.5inch SS Y-Pipe offers two options that reduce this restriction and allow the GT-R to make more power with less effort; one with catalytic converters and one without.

The catted version of the COBB 3.5inch SS Y-Pipe uses custom-spun high-flow metal substrate catalytic converters that improve flow while protecting the environment by reducing emissions. The off-road racing y-pipe deletes the catalytic converters entirely, further improving flow and allowing even more power.

Both the catted and catless versions of the COBB 3.5inch SS Y-Pipe are fully constructed of 304 stainless steel and TIG welded. The stainless steel flex sections are internally-lined for added lifespan and smoother exhaust flow. Dual 3inch downpipes feed into a 3.5inch main pipe. Designed as a direct factory replacement part.

The following dyno chart compares a stock untuned Nissan GT-R, a stock Nissan GT-R with an AccessPORT Stage 1 tune, and a Nissan GT-R with the catless Y-Pipe and AccessPORT tune. At peak power, 28 HP and 46 ft/lb is gained with the catless y-pipe over Stage 1. Gains of up to 50HP can be found in the midrange.

COBB 3.5inch SS Y-Pipe Features:
• Large gains in HP & TQ
• 304 stainless throughout
• TIG welded
• Direct replacement for OEM
• Custom spun metal subtrate cats or catless options
• Similar power gains between catted and catless options with stock turbos

Massive COBB AccessPORT Map Release for EVO X

December 1st, 2009 Redline Motive No comments

evoxap

COBB Tuning is proud to announce a significant expansion of the COBB AccessPORT Map Database for the USDM Mitsubishi EVO X. Efforts for this expansion have been underway for some time and everyone at COBB Tuning is excited to see these maps made available for tuning enthusiasts. EVO X owners now have over 120 maps to choose from to meet the needs of their specific modifications!

The first major expansion is the availability of maps designed for use with Deatschwerks 800cc fuel injectors. Every previous Stage2 map is now also available with appropriate calibrations for DW800cc injectors across multiple pump fuel grades. That’s 36 additional maps for DW800cc injectors alone. These maps make great starting points for tuning big power with large turbo upgrades.

Since the addition of DW800cc injectors opened the door to higher fuel flow, COBB Tuning went ahead and created new E85 maps for every previous Stage2 map as well. 12 additional DW800cc + E85 maps are now available for download. The combination the DW800cc gasoline maps and E85 maps allows for easy transition between fuel types just by switching maps with the AccessPORT. Take advantage of the additional power available from E85 when it’s readily available, and switch back to a safe fossil fuel map when it’s not. Please note that the stock fuel pump is not adequate to deliver the required volume for E85 fuel.

Furthermore, all maps have been upreved to take advantage of the Torque Monitor Defeat feature in the new software. The ECU logic that checks to see if torque and airflow are within targets has been defeated on all maps. This will prevent DTC’s and limp modes from occurring when measured values are outside of table targets.

All 120+ maps are currently available for download in the COBB AccessPORT Map Database for the EVO X.

COBB Tuning is dedicated to providing the most comprehensive solutions for tuning enthusiasts. The COBB AccessPORT is the most powerful and easy to use hand held tuner in the world. Plug in and access the potential of your high performance import today!

COBB XLE Blow Off Valve

November 18th, 2009 Redline Motive No comments

cobb-bov

COBB Tuning announces the availability of the XLE Blow Off Valve (BOV) for turbo equipped Subarus and the MAZDASPEED3. The COBB XLE BOV can be configured to operate in multiple modes using simple hand tools. Innovative engineering and precision manufacturing result in a compact package capable of holding high levels of boost consistently and reliably.

The COBB XLE BOV can operate in one of three modes with simple adjustments. Full recirculation is achieved by plumbing the primary output back into the intake pre-turbo with the auxiliary port closed. Full atmosphere is possible by opening both the primary port and auxiliary port to atmosphere. A hybrid mode is also possible by pluming the primary port into the intake and leaving the auxiliary port open to atmosphere, causing much of the air to recirculate to retain driveability, while still creating an audible exhaust of some of the boost pressure.

Spring preload determines the pressure differential across the BOV piston required before the BOV opens and releases the pressurized intake charge. The COBB XLE BOV can be adjusted by loosening the locknut and turning the hex-head shaft clockwise for more preload or counter-clockwise for less preload. Once preload is set, the locknut is retightened and ensures the adjustment is secure.

Materials used to construct the COBB XLE BOV ensure ease of maintenance and long service life. The mounting flange, body, vent cover and piston are constructed of 6061 T6 aluminum, the spring seat is made from 303 stainless steel and the primary outlet is polished cast aluminum. O rings are used around the piston and on the mounting flange to ensure optimal sealing. The valve body is hard anodized for strength and corrosion resistance. The piston is dry filmed lubricated, providing enduring maintenance free service.

COBB Tuning is offering the XLE BOV for the following applications:

YEAR  MAKE     MODEL PART #   PRICE
2004 – 2009 Subaru Impreza STi 712650 $295.00
2002 – 2007 Subaru Impreza WRX 712650 $295.00
2008 – 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX 724650 $295.00
2005 – 2009 Subaru Legacy 724650 $295.00
2004 – 2009 Subaru Forester XT 712650 $295.00
2009 Subaru 2.5GT 724650 $295.00

Nissan GT-R Record Breaking Power with COBB AccessPORT

November 16th, 2009 Redline Motive No comments

gtr-cobb

GOTO:Racing’s GT-R represents the very edge of development for this particular platform. There are perhaps a handful of fully race-prepared GT-Rs in the world. Of course, because this vehicle is not a factory effort, the progress on the GOTO GT-R is a direct reflection of the aftermarket industry that supports the GT-R. GOTO:Racing and the Lock family have prepared a state of the art chassis. However, at a comparatively heavy 3,400 pounds, this race car needs serious power to be competitive.

gtr-cobb-1

The GOTO:Racing GT-R is equipped with the COBB Tuning AccessPORT and custom mapping from a collaboration of Tim Bailey from COBB Tuning Surgeline, Portland, OR and Jon Drenas of HB Speed, Hunington Beach, CA. This form of engine management was a natural choice with the stock turbo chargers and just over 520whp, but some suggested with the recent addition of larger turbos from AMS and fuel injectors from Deatschwerks, that a standalone engine management system was needed. We are pleased to demonstrate in no uncertain terms that the COBB Tuning AccessPORT, with supporting modifications and competent tuning, is capable of coordinating extremely high horsepower.

Specifications:
Vehicle – 2010 Nissan GTR – race prepared by GOTO Racing/Brian Lock Racing
Engine – stock GT-R
Turbo – AMS stock location turbo upgrade
Injectors – Deatschwerks (800cc)
Fuel – 100 octane unleaded
Exhaust– fully catless 3”
Intake – Custom Harman Motive 3.1” ID intake with stock MAF sensors

Technical Tuning details
The key to tuning this car is the addition of the larger inner diameter intakes, kindly supplied by Harman Motive. The stock intake inner diameter is just 2.5-inches. This substantive increase in intake cross sectional area means that we can accurately measure up to 40% more airflow than is possible with the stock intake system. As you can see from the graph below, we were able to flow close to the limits of the MAF sensor without saturating their 5-Volt limit.

Because we were able to accurately meter airflow throughout the full RPM and boost range, the tuned stock ECU can easily control ignition timing and fueling. We have supplied relevant information for the rest of the tuning parameters in the additional graphs.

September 17th, 2009 Redline Motive No comments

COBB Tuning announces the availability of the Limited Edition Secondary Oil Cooler kit for the Nissan GT-R R35. The COBB Secondary Oil Cooler reduces high engine oil temperatures that occur during extreme driving conditions. This kit utilizes an auxiliary oil cooling core that seamlessly integrates with the OEM oil cooling system, significantly reducing oil temperatures without compromise. Whether pounding around the racetrack or canyon carving during blistering heat, the COBB Secondary Oil Cooler lets your GT-R keep its cool.

Additional horsepower, high ambient temperatures, high altitude and aggressive driving can all contribute to elevated oil temperature. Lower oil temperature ensures better engine protection and longer engine life. Extensive racing and testing data shows that the COBB Secondary Oil Cooler is capable of reducing oil temperatures from extreme peaks of 130C/266F (OEM redline) to acceptable operating temperatures in the 110C/230F range.

This elegantly engineered kit sits opposite the OEM oil cooler in the unused driver side bumper duct. The design is optimized to work with the OEM oil cooler duct, which is included in this kit. Oil flow return from the OEM oil cooler is diverted to the COBB Secondary Oil Cooler for an additional oil cooling stage before being redirected back to the OEM oil return.

Execution of the COBB Secondary Oil Cooler kit leaves nothing to be desired. A Mocal air-to-oil core is used for efficiency and durability. The core is mounted to the chassis using a custom CAD designed aluminum bracket that is designed to work with the included OEM oil cooler duct. The adaptor fittings are custom CAD designed and CNC machined aluminum with black anodizing. All hose ends are high quality aluminum -10 AN fittings with an attractive black and titanium anodized finish. Hoses are preassembled using smooth bore, lightweight synthetic rubber interiors with black nylon overbraid and encased in XRP Fyrefoil 2 radiant heat shielding for additional thermal resistance. The replacement gaskets are Nissan OEM parts.

The Limited Edition COBB Secondary Oil Cooler for the Nissan GT-R R35 is the most comprehensive solution for managing engine oil temperature. Install a COBB Secondary Oil Cooler on your GT-R R35 and drive at the limit without distraction.
